May Meeting Minutes PDF Print E-mail
Written by Brent Humphreys

May 15, 2010 - International Learn to Fly Day with 44 members and guests in attendance.
Young Eagle flights were cancelled due to rain but a few families came by to ask about flying. Adam Martin, a young man from West Plains interested in an aviation career stayed and attended the meeting.  Guest Larry Huiett was introduced.  He and his wife have a greenhouse on Hwy 76 with bedding plants, shrubs and trees for sale and she is a nurse supervisor with Air Evac.
The business meeting was called to order by President Tom White.  He thanked the great cooks for the Mexican potluck lunch.  He also thanked Berlin Batesel, Bob Bohemier, Bob Brantley, Bill Ghan and Jerry Pfister for helping him with all the mowing and weed cutting earlier in the week.  A motion to approve the minutes was made by David Johnson, second by Jerry Pfister and approved.

Treasurer Jim Vokac gave the financial report.   A motion to approve was made by Tom Bentele, second by Doc Openshaw and approved by members.  A question was raised concerning what seemed like costly monthly utilities.  While painting the Pietenpol, the doors were open for ventilation while the heat was on.

Janet Brantley reported on Bob’s condition.  During the Air Evac tour on Thursday, he had an episode.  It turns out he had a stroke centered in the brain stem.  They do not have the results of his MRI yet.  He still has some numbness on the left side of his face, not visible to others and weakness in his left leg.  Janet said if you are ever going to have a stroke, Air Evac is the place to do it.  In about 3 minutes, they had his blood sugar and blood pressure, on oxygen, had him on a table, his feet elevated and his shirt off.  He is in OMC, room 256 and doing well.

President White showed the handheld radio delivered last month by Roddy Clark.  It was donated by Dr. Pickle, Mansfield.

Pietenpol update: Berlin Batesel is flying it some when the weather cooperates.  He has had it up to 3500 feet.  Jack Richardson passed out EAA Chapter 1218 Pietenpol buttons he made for all the members.  He made some that said builder and a test pilot one for Berlin Batesel.  An appreciative round of applause was given to Jack for his hard work.

President White asked for volunteers to mow while he is on vacation.  Berlin, Bill Ghan, Darryl Hanson and Rory volunteered.

Rory set up his computer with his flight simulator program.  He suggested when we purchase a larger television, we should also have a computer to use his program.  It has the capability to design and build an aircraft and determine if the design is flyable.  Don Nevels said some of the modern simulators are very valuable training tools; some simulator training is the same as in an actual airplane.  The nice thing about one is you can stop it versus an airplane at a hundred miles an hour.  Several members flew the helicopter simulator during the Air Evac tour.  Rory took off and flew it around without even having the instructor’s guidance.

June 5th & 6th is Art Fest & Craft Show.  President Tom will not be available that weekend.  Volunteers are needed and someone to oversee getting the simulator and tent out there on time.  If there are no volunteers, we would need to cancel.  After some discussion, Jerry Pfister will be in charge of getting the simulator and tent set up on time.  Secretary White will contact him with the list of volunteers and other needed information.

June 12 is International Young Eagle Day and our normal meeting day.  Insurance is already in place for the event.  Secretary White made a motion to fly Young Eagles 9-noon with potluck to follow and meet after lunch.  Second was made by Bill Ghan and approved by members present.   President White read some area flying events posters.  One In particular is for June 5th & 6th.  He said everyone would be busy volunteering for the art show so he wadded it up and threw it away.

Bill Ghan has submitted the necessary paperwork for Berlin Batesel’s nomination for the Major Achievement Award.  He put a lot of work into it and we appreciate it.   We will discuss in June the possibility of a project tour in July.  David Johnson hopes to have his project here in the next couple of weeks.  Clint is still working on the Jenny and John DeRoos is working on his project.  Doc’s is about ready to fly.  Berlin has 2 or 3 to hopefully get back to now that the Piet is complete.

Henny reminded us of chapter member Arnie Zimmerman’s upcoming induction to the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame.   She will send a congratulatory card on the chapter’s behalf.

Each year Willow Springs has a 4th of July parade; this year it will be on July 3rd since the 4th is on Sunday.  Oz Fall Fest will be October 2nd; we will discuss it at a later date.

Motion to adjourn was made by Jim Vokac, second by Mike White and approved by members.

“Free airplane rides are just part of the Flight Rally,” said Bob Brantley, spokesman for the event. “We hope to build one-to-one relationships between pilots and young people, giving a new generation a chance to learn more about the possibilities that exist in the world of aviation.”

2010 April Meeting Minutes PDF Print E-mail
Written by Brent Humphreys
Wednesday, 05 May 2010 02:16

April 10, 2010   54 members and guests enjoyed the burger/brat cookout followed by the monthly meeting called to order by President Tom White.  Tom thanked the cooks for bringing the side dishes and desserts and the grill cooks for fixing the burgers and brats.

A motion to approve the minutes as published was made by Henny Christensen, second by Mike Vaughn and approved by members present.

Treasurer Jim Vokac reported the financial status.  A motion to approve was made by Bob Brantley, second by John DeRoos and approved by members.

Vice President Berlin Batesel reported on the Pietenpol status. For the past couple of weeks, he has been working with Neal Sowers who is going to inspect it.   They have the weight and balance worked out.

The Executive Committee and the Pietenpol Building Committee met following last month’s meeting. The asking price has been set $26,000.00.  Any member interested in purchasing the Piet should talk to Berlin Batesel.  The engine startup video is on the chapter webpage.  President White asked if everyone has been checking the webpage for Pietenpol updates.  Brent Humphreys has been doing a great job posting timely updates.

Chapter #20 of the MPA will have a poker run on April 17 to 9 area airports 10-2 PM.  They are seeking prizes for participants.  Willow Springs Airport Manager Jim Vokac reported the W.S. Airport will donate $50 in fuel.  Phyllis White made a motion for the chapter to donate $100 in fuel (same as last fall) with the prize being given as $50 high card drawn at Willow Springs and $50 for the low card drawn at Willow Springs. Second to the motion was made by Clint Allen and approved by members present.  Jim Vokac needs a volunteer to man W.S. from 9:45 – 11:15 while he attends another meeting.

There is enough interest in an Air Evac tour to set a date in May.  Date and time will be sent to members via e-mail.  (Since the meeting, a date of May 13th 9 AM has been set.)

Member Darryl Hanson reminded members of the Art/Craft Show scheduled for June 5th and 6th, 9-5 PM.   It has been suggested the chapter have a booth to enhance awareness of who we are and what we do.  A scheduling signup sheet was passed around for volunteers to choose their time to man the booth.  Darryl said the booth fee would be taken care of.  We could raffle the biplane mailbox, show photos of building the Piet, Jim Tausworthe will sign and sell books, etc.  Young Eagles may be flown that day also.   The new issue of the Brodhead Pietenpol Association Newsletter just came out.  We are on page 13.  Jack Richardson submitted the photo of him receiving his white scarf and a picture of Phyllis White.   Our subscription to the Brodhead Pietenpol Newsletter has expired.  A motion to renew was made by Clint Allen, second by Benny Butler and approved by members present.

The May meeting is scheduled for the 8th.  President White has received a request for a fly over Republic on that date.  A lady in Kentucky called asking if during the memorial service for her brother, a pilot and EAA member54, if a fly over Republic, MO would be possible.  After a discussion about restricted airspace in that area, it was determined the members would not be able to do a flyover.
Saturday, May 15th is the first ever International Learn to Fly Day.  Ideas were discussed; newspaper articles, press release, pilot interviews on radio and we will fly Young Eagles 9-Noon weather permitting.  Henny Christensen made a motion to move the chapter meeting to that day, second by Mike Vaughn.    Mexican potluck lunch will follow, then the chapter meeting.  Since the meeting will be the third Saturday, there should be breakfast at Ron’s.  Bob Brantley asked for pilots and flightline volunteers for that morning.

President White noted that chapter was formed and the charter was signed in 1998.  Recently, chapter member Sue L’Hommedieu asked to sign the charter since she was unable to do so in 1998.  EAA Legal Counsel advised no to the request citing poor corporate governance to allow such.  President White has discussed the issue with some of the charter members still with us.  He asked for member comments.  Clint Allen said he was present at most of the meetings and saw Fred Kalhoefer there quite often but did not recall seeing Sue (Kalhoefer) L’Hommedieu.  Bill Ghan said there were multiple opportunities presented to sign the charter.  President White’s opinion is “Could I sign that charter now”.  Chuck Hiett said he thinks the answer is no to Sue signing.  President White asked for a show of hands; unanimous vote no.  Fred said in all fairness to Sue, she did not want to come to the meetings when he asked her but after she became a member, she did a lot of hard work putting out the newsletter.  She should get some honorable mention for that.
It is official; Berlin Batesel is now a chapter technical counselor and has the card to prove it.  Clint Allen is a national technical counselor.

Secretary White said we have received the EAA 2010 nomination forms for Major Achievement, Newsletter Editor, Web Editor and Young Eagle Awards.  All nominations are due by May 31, 2010 to be eligible.  Bill Ghan nominated Berlin Batesel for Major Achievement, second by Bob Brantley approved by members.  Bill & Henny Christensen will fill out the form. A motion to nominate Brent Humphreys for Web Editor was made by Benny Butler, second by Clint Allen and approved by members present.

President White reminded members to contribute to the donation jar to offset the burger and brats purchase.
Members are asked to remember Ben Andre and family; his wife Onalee passed away earlier in the week.  Several members attended the visitation.
A motion to adjourn was made by George Wilkie, second by Clint Allen and approved by members.  Cleanup followed.
