We arrived yesterday to camp Scholler for Airventure and found a very wet campground. Our camping area had been chosen last week by some other RV-10 builders. At the time, the grounds were very wet, then they got another 3 or so inches of rain, making matters even worse. As of right now the organizers are having to turn away aircraft since there is just not enough dry ground to safely park airplanes. As the ground dries, they immediately begin accepting more. They re-evaluate every hour in an effort to accommodate as many aircraft as possible. Camp Scholler is in the same predicament. The grounds are just too muddy to maneuver campers and RV's. The excellent EAA volunteers and staff have done a great job making arrangements to park campers along roads, in parking lots, and just about any hard surface they can find. I have heard reports and seen campers parked in many places, just waiting for the word that they can come in. We got very lucky and were able to bring our camper into the campground, where an EAA tractor hooked up and towed it into our camp space. The area where we are camped is too damp to park the truck without contributing to the muck, so Erica and I parked the truck out of the way and procured some galoshes for the walk back and forth. In the true spirit of Airventure, just as we were prepping to schlep all of our luggage to the camper, someone showed up with a gator and an offer to haul our gear to the camper. Today we got a chance to pay it forward when we hooked the chains up to pull a van stuck in the mud. This is Oshkosh, and everyone is having fun and ready for a great show.
