We had a great day Saturday, celebrating our countries Independence. Several of our members participated in the Willow Springs parade, doing a loose formation flyover, and in a float featuring the Pietenpol fuselage.
After the parade, we assembled back at the hangar to admire the airplanes, enjoy the food, and good friends.
I put together a short video featuring some of the events of the day, including the tradition of "Shooting an Anvil"
I did a little research on the Anvil Shoot. Best I can tell, the Anvil shoot became very popular in the South after the civil war. Most of the cannons, which were sometimes shot to celebrate Independence day, were removed from the South after the war. In order to celebrate, blacksmiths began using their anvils. There apparently are competitions, where Anvil's can be shot as high as 600 ft.
