October 10, 2009 Jerry L. Smith Memorial Fly-In and Open House/approximate attendance 150

The annual meeting was called to order by President Tom White with 27 members and guests present.   Garmin shirts were given to David Johnson and Fred Kalhoefer from the nametags turned in from the open house.

A motion to approve the minutes as published on the webpage was made by David Johnson, second by Clint Allen and approved by members present.

The Treasurer’s report was given by Phyllis White due to the absence of Jim Vokac.  A motion to approve was made by Benny Butler, second by Bob Brantley and approved by members present.  Secretary White pointed out the “members gone west” plaque.  The engraved plates were $108.77 and the beautiful wood plaque was made and donated by Ron White.

The Oz Fall Fest was deemed a success.  Plans are in the works for next year.  The chapter booth flight simulator stayed busy.  Members manning the booth were Henny Christensen, Eric Fremgen, Ray Fine, Jerry Pfister and Sandy Smith.  A big thank you was extended to the members participating.

A big round of applause was given to the cooks for the fly-in.  George Wilkie and Bob Brantley cooked the brats and burgers and several members made the morning “goodies”, side dishes and desserts.  President White welcomed guest Doug Hart, Pomona.  He manufactures ultralights and brought one to display during the fly-in.

Last week Sandy Smith had some landscaping done along Jerry L. Smith Way and in front of the pilot’s lounge.  The contractor was unable to finish until the footings for the new airport welcome sign had been poured and Sandy wanted it completed for the fly-in.    The City of Willow Springs did not have the funds available to purchase the concrete necessary.    Airport Manager and Chapter Treasurer Jim Vokac asked about chapter members helping with the bill.  President White asked members to consider pledging funds on an individual basis.  The total cost has not been finalized yet.

Bob Brantley asked Ron White to cancel breakfast at his hangar next Saturday, October 17th so members could attend the Senior Center breakfast hosted by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.  It is a fundraiser for the Senior Center.

Annual meeting agenda requires the election of officers.  Nominating committee member John Smith announced the committee recommendation is to retain the same slate as 2009 with the exception of Member at Large nomination of Bob Bohemier.  A call for nominations from the floor resulted in no response.  A motion to elect the slate of officers as announced was made by John Smith, second by Bill Ghan and approved by members present.

The winner of the drawing for the biplane mailbox was Joe Ghan, Bill’s grandson.  $159 in raffle tickets was sold.

Secretary White thanked everyone that participated in the fly-in.  Sandy Smith had told her it was such an honor to see everyone; all the fellowship; she thought it was a wonderful day.  President White noted the positive response from visitors; the Garmin people were glad we did it.  It was a great day; a little emotional at times especially when Jerry’s Super D flew over.  He asked members to keep those memories alive; swap stories about our fellow aviators gone west.  President White  thanked the members for their continued support and participation in chapter events.

Several years ago the chapter voted to move the November meeting to the first Saturday due to deer season starting on the second Saturday of the month.  It will be November 7th, potluck breakfast at 9 am with the meeting to follow.

There will be no breakfast at Ron White’s hangar until after the first of the year.

A motion to adjourn was made by Benny Butler, second by Mike White and approved by members present.  Cleanup followed.
