Following delicious potluck breakfast, the September 12, 2009 meeting was called to order by President Tom White with 46 members and guests present. A big thank you was given to the cooks. A motion to approve the minutes as published was made by Mike Noonan, second by John DeRoos and approved by members present. Treasurer Jim Vokac gave the financial report. The Pietenpol expenses now total $X. A motion to approve was made by Bob Brantley, second by Clint Allen and approved by members present. The $XX CD has a due date of 11/26/09. (Following the meeting Jim reported he had given an incorrect amount on the CD. Corrected amount is $XX.) A request was sent out for Open House volunteers a week prior to the meeting with only two members responding. Help is needed to park cars, park airplanes, grill cooks, etc. Brian Powers has agreed to provide us with two mules to assist with parking. President White asked again for volunteers. Tom Bentele, David & Lisa Johnson, Jerry Pfister and Brent Humphreys (if he’s in town) volunteered. Secretary White gave an update on the planning. A notice to be included in the calendar of events at EAA, GANews, AOPA, AVweb, Fly-Low, flyincalendar.com and local radio stations has been sent some time ago due to lead time for publication. Local newspapers will receive a press release closer to the event. The noon cookout will be burgers and brats tea, coffee and cider with assigned side dishes. Calls to members with dish requests will be soon. There had been an idea of selling baked goods as a fund raiser but we would then be subject to a health inspection. Members will also be asked to bring nut breads, cookies, etc. to begin the day. The Open House is scheduled 10AM to 2 PM then chapter annual meeting and election of officers. The bridge will be dedicated that day also. Garmin and Jerry’s customers have been invited. Jerry had customers in seven states. If any of them want to camp out, Jim Vokac has volunteered use of his rv for hot showers. There has been on requests for chapter t-shirts. Some workdays will be scheduled before the open house for meeting room cleaning, brush removal, limb trimming. Jerry Pfister will bring his pole saw for limbs. There is someone at the hangar nearly every day for building access. John Smith in charge of building maintenance has been asked to oversee tightening the overhead door and replacing the light over the buffet tables. The MPA Poker Run is scheduled for next Saturday, September 19. We are hoping Mtn. View, West Plains and Willow Springs will all be open for the event. Work is being done at all three. The MPA meeting will be held at Mtn. View on that date. Drive or fly in for breakfast, which ever is possible. Sharon Vaughn suggested calling to check on the status of Mtn. View. Equipment has been moving in to Willow; work is for 3-7 days. President White suggested the Chapter donate some prize for the poker run. Hunter Oil, Cabool has donated a case of oil. West Plains and Mtn. View has not committed an amount yet. The City of Willow Springs will not be able to donate anything, but Airport Manager Jim Vokac will personally donate a $40 prize. A motion was made by Brent Humphreys, second by Tom Bentele to give two $50 fuel certificates as poker run prizes. The motion was approved by members present. Jim reported the September fuel price is $3.80. The Nominating Committee spokesman John Smith announced the same slate of officers as last year except for Member at Large to be Bob Bohemier. Members are encouraged to volunteer for any position and at the annual meeting nominations will be accepted from the floor for all positions. October 3 will be Oz Fall Fest with all booths to have an “Oz” theme. The chapter booth space will have scarecrows in airplanes, a yellow brick road, cornstalks, etc. The plan is to sell airplane mailbox raffle tickets, demonstrate the simulator, register Young Eagles for future flights and have a video on building the Pietenpol, etc. Members volunteering to man the booth are Henny Christensen, Jerry Pfister, Eric Fremgen and Ray Fine.
Upcoming fly-ins includes Jonesboro, September 26, Marshall, AR October 2-4, and Reklaw, TX October 23-25. Jim Vokac has received a card from Zodiac, Marshall, MO; visit their website @ zodiac601XL.info. Mike Noonan has a tow bar and avionics taken from several planes over the last few years for sale. Brent Humphreys has the item list.
There will be no breakfast at Ron’s hangar on October 3 due to preparation for the White Industries annual picnic to be held that evening. President White noted the accidental death of US Aerobatic Champion Vicki Cruse in England. She was born in Ozark and attended high school in Springfield. In July, 2006 she visited Willow Springs Airport in her Edge, toured the chapter hangar and posed for photos with Ron & Tom White and Dean Pruitt, Mountain Grove. She gave an impromptu aerobatic demonstration as she flew away. Later that month she sent an autographed photo to the chapter.
Bob Brantley asked the members give an update on their projects. The Johnson’s have been to California to see their first grandbaby Amelia so nothing was done on the plane last week. Lisa has lots of baby pictures; no airplane pictures. They are at about the same point as the tour except the wing spars have been fitted with ribs. One of the skins is klecoed. Lisa said they worked on it until midnight the night before their trip. Brent Humphreys said the tail cone we saw during the tour has been completely disassembled and he is now going through the monotonous deburring process. Ron Hook has reinjured his shoulder; his project is on temporary hold. He is visiting the manufacturer next week to discuss options for moving the gear forward to make it a tail dragger. He hopes to have it flying soon. Clint Allen said on the Jenny, “measure twice, cut once”, not do like he did; cut twice; when he measured once. Berlin Batesel reported next week they hope to have all the painting complete on the Pietenpol. Brent Humphreys asked what the status was on the Young Eagle program. He would like to see more emphasis next year. Secretary White said we were going to register for future Young Eagle flights at Oz Fall Fest. President White noted we don’t have any problem getting the Young Eagles but getting the old buzzards to fly them. Brent also said even if there was a young person interested in learning to fly, there are no aircraft available for rent in the area. He drove to Jonesboro last Saturday to log 10 minutes flight time. New member Richard Green mentioned Boone Peabody, Cabool is an instructor with a 152 available. Brent suggested forming a flying club. If anyone is interested, contact him. Mike Vaughn asked if he would be willing to pay $300 to rent an airplane for an hour. Brent said he spent almost that much on the Jonesboro trip. Mike pointed out the insurance is $8000 per year on a rental airplane. Brent said with a club situation, the rates would be less expensive. He said he understood from a business standpoint why people do not want to rent. David Johnson mentioned he found an instructor in Cape Girardeau. He is Terry Irwin, retired school teacher and flight instructor for 30 years. He typically does not help people pursue their ticket; he deals mainly with flight reviews, certifications and endorsements.
Motion to adjourn was made by Mike Vaughn, second by John Smith and approved by membership. Cleanup followed. |
